ISLAMABAD – The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has initiated a formal inquiry into alleged corruption, money laundering, and misuse of authority against Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leader and former Senator Farhatullah Babar, sources revealed on Thursday.
According to documents and official sources, the FIA’s Anti-Corruption and Crime Circle in Islamabad has registered inquiry no. 108/2025 following a written complaint submitted by a private citizen from the Morgah area of Rawalpindi on March 23. The complaint, verified and approved by the agency, accused Babar of financial irregularities, including foreign funding and misuse of official resources during his tenure as Senator.
Prior to the FIA probe, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had served a notice on Babar on March 21, questioning his income declarations and pending tax liabilities. The FIA subsequently issued two separate notices, summoning him for questioning before the investigation officer. The most recent summon was issued just before Eid, with a follow-up appearance scheduled shortly after the holiday.
The FIA has handed over a questionnaire comprising 18 to 20 detailed queries to Babar, demanding full disclosure of both movable and immovable assets, bank accounts, registered vehicles, income sources, and tax returns. Additionally, it seeks information on properties registered under the names of his spouse and other family members, along with records of any foreign funding or financial benefits received during his time in the Senate.
Sources confirm that Babar, after consulting with his legal counsel, has agreed to respond in writing. He has also formally requested a copy of the complaint and details about the complainant, which the FIA has acknowledged but not yet provided.
PPP Secretary Information Shazia Marri condemned the inquiry, stating that Farhatullah Babar has held no public office since 2013 and currently serves only as President of the PPP Human Rights Wing. “It is deeply regrettable that a veteran leader and human rights defender is being subjected to such politically motivated inquiries,” she said.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP), Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), and several political figures have also denounced the FIA’s investigation, terming it a potential attempt to silence dissenting voices in civil society.
However, FIA sources insist the inquiry is being conducted in a “transparent and impartial” manner, with all legal procedures being strictly followed. Officials said the agency is in the process of finalizing its Case Fact Report (CFR), which will determine whether formal charges should be filed against the former Senator.
Farhatullah Babar, known for his advocacy on democratic and human rights issues, remains a prominent figure in Pakistan’s political landscape, and the outcome of this investigation is likely to attract significant public and political attention.
